Tokyo, Japan - April 17, 2000 -

Combination of JBlendT with the PointBase Embedded Database will Create Trend-Setting New Potential in Next-Generation Consumer Electronics

Aplix Corporation (HQ: Tokyo; CEO: Ryu Koriyama) and the J-PHONE Group announced today that they are jointly involved in the development of next generation cellular phones with the JTRON Specification real-time operating system "JBlendT" as their basic platform.

Aplix Corporation's "JBlendT" optimizes Java technology for embedded applications, and enables companies to deliver highly competitive products to the market.

"JBlendT" enabled cellular phones will open up a whole new trend in the future of the mobile communication device industry.

Next-generation cellular phones require a widely enhanced range of functions to be able to serve as efficient individual interfaces for the ever-growing network information society.

The advanced Java network supporting technologies of "JBlendT" can instantaneously transform a cellular phone into an information terminal that can execute a wide-range of applications. The phone will be able to provide functions such as access to a company information system, home-appliance controls, games, 'karaoke', and music distribution in addition to the standard email and ring melody download features provided by conventional cellular phones.

J-PHONE is becoming increasingly popular as a more powerful and user-friendly communication tool among cellular phone users, particularly the younger generation. The next-generation J-PHONE products installed with "JBlendT", which already has a proven track record for its implementation in many commercial products, will absolutely lead the Japanese and global mobile communication market far into the foreseeable future."

  • J-PHONE Group

The total number of J-PHONE Group subscriber phones has exceeded approximately 8.1 million as of March 2000. This number continues to grow every day.

J-PHONE Group has expanded its service area to subway stations, set up a nationwide service network, lowered its call charge rates, reduced the size of its phones, and provided multi-function capability and a very popular Internet connection service called J-Sky. The quality of calls and unique services provided by the J-PHONE Group has earned the company a reputation of being far ahead of all other manufacturers.

These are but a few of the factors that have contributed to the rapid growth of J-PHONE Group.

  • What is JBlendT?

Aplix Corporation's JBlendT is a hybrid operating system that takes full advantage of legacy software resources and provides advanced network support as well as high extensibility. The operating system lets Java technology cooperatively with real-time operating system tasks.

JBlendT is a blend of the Java platform of Sun Microsystems, Inc. (U.S.) and the industry-standard embedded controlling operating system ITRON. The operating system offers both the superb real-time processing capability of ITRON and a user-friendly GUI environment. It can significantly reduce the time required for development processes, which enables manufacturers to deliver products in the shortest time to market.

Already a highly acknowledged real-time operating system in the audio and visual equipment field, JBlendT has been implemented in Sanyo Electric's Digital Image Album, a digital camera picture storage/playback tool, and in the Sony MD Discam, mini-disc video camera. Aplix Corporation is currently involved in several joint development projects with major manufacturers including those that have not been announced yet. The high reliable embedded operating system JBlendT is the essential key in the development of next-generation devices.
