Aplix Corporation JBlend™ Embedded Java Solution Adopted for Sony's Newest Digital Photo Printer

Tokyo, Japan - June 22, 2001 -

Sony and Aplix Corporation to continue their cooperation on future development of Java-embedded consumer electronics

Aplix Corporation (head office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Ryu Koriyama) is pleased to announce that its JBlend™ Java solution for embedded systems has been adopted in the DPP-SV88 digital photo printer, to be put on sale shortly by Sony Marketing (Japan) Inc. (head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Kei Kodera). The DPP-SV88 offers an easy way for home users to make high-quality prints of photos shot on a digital still camera.

The DPP-SV88 comes equipped with a CD-R/RW drive. Images saved on a Memory Stick or other medium can be written directly to a CD-R/RW disk. Users of this home digital photo printer will be able to create digital photo albums readily without needing to hook up to a personal computer. The printer itself has an extensive array of photo processing and editing functions for image zoom, trimming and more. Text can be superimposed to add messages to photos and to create picture postcards or calendars. Index printing is another of the many supported features that can be enjoyed using simple operations. This exciting product is sure to be welcomed by the rapidly growing ranks of digital camera buffs, offering them new ways to take advantage of the "process, print and preserve" features of digital photos.

JBlend™, Aplix Corporation's Java technology for embedded systems used in the DPP-SV88, enables products to be developed much more quickly than before for faster time to market while making effective use of existing software resources. It combines real-time tasks, meeting the need for outstanding network functionality and extensibility, with Java optimized for embedded use. JBlend™ is already used in Sanyo Electric's Digital Image Album, a device for storing and viewing digital still images, and in Sony's Mini Disc camcorder, the MD DISCAM. It has also been chosen as the platform for J-Phone's next-generation cellular phones, and in many more products including some joint developments with leading manufacturers still to be announced. JBlend™ is fast becoming an industry standard for the next generation of Java-equipped digital consumer electronics.

For Sony, the new digital photo printer is its third product to be developed using Aplix Corporation JBlend™. The first was the MD DISCAM Mini Disc camcorder, which drew wide notice as the first Java-equipped consumer electronics product. It was followed by the SO503i cellular phone supporting i-Appli.
