Aplix Chairman/CEO Ryu Koriyama Receives "2002 NikkeiBP Innovators Award"
San Francisco, CA - December 3, 2002 -
Aplix Corporation, the global leader in deploying Java™ technology in mobile phones, announced today that its chief executive officer and chairman, Mr. Ryu Koriyama, has been named one of only five recipients of the "2002 NikkeiBP Innovator Award", sponsored by Nikkei Business Press.
Mr. Koriyama and the four other recipients were honored at an awards ceremony on November 21 in Tokyo. Candidates with unique ideas originating in Japan were selected from diverse professions and fields including: engineers who contributed to the development of technology in Japan through creative research, those with innovative technology and business models that have the potential to nurture the future of the Japanese industry, and people who put their efforts to revitalizing the business of major companies.
Mr. Koriyama, who received an Excellence Award, was recognized for facilitating the application of Sun Microsystems' Java software technology to wireless devices, such as mobile phones. Java was initially implemented in PCs and servers. Aplix's JBlend™ technology has shipped in more than 12 million mobile phones and home electronics devices, and is used by 12 out of 13 manufacturers offering Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME™ technology-enabled mobile phones in Japan. Aplix, headquartered in Tokyo, has been leveraging its leadership into the North American, European and Asian markets through its Aplix Corporation of America affiliate and Paris office.
In a news release, NikkeiBP described Mr. Koriyama as "a pioneer in Japan to have explored into the age of (the) ubiquitous computer. Although Java is a software originating in the U.S., Java application to compact information equipments is based on a totally new idea. He was evaluated for creating an opportunity for the Japanese computer industry to make a leap forward."

Grand Prize: Toshio Suzuki, producer for Studio Ghibli , who produced the animated film and Golden Bear Award winner (Berlin Film Festival), "Spirited Away (Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi)."

Excellence Award: Ryuichi Morishita, associate professor of Osaka University's Medical Department, who pioneered a therapeutic technique in which HGF was used to create new blood vessels.

Excellence Award: Misuji Kyozuka of ESI, for his innovation in addressing Japan's serious waste problem through establishment of a system to convert supermarket garbage into compost.

Special Award: Koichi Tanaka of Shimadzu Corporation, who recently became the first Japanese corporate researcher to win the Nobel Prize (in chemistry).
