LiMo Foundation™ selects Aplix’s “SafeWID” for BONDI Web Runtime
September 29, 2009
Aplix Corporation is pleased to announce that the LiMo Foundation™ has selected its SafeWID product (code name WebVM), which enables the most powerful and compliant implementation of the BONDI specification, to be integrated into the LiMo Platform™ as its web runtime solution. The Aplix solution will allow the LiMo Foundation to accelerate the delivery of a BONDI compliant WebSDK and web runtime on the LiMo Platform Reference Implementations.
Supported by the OMTP members including 3 Group, AT&T, T-Mobile, Telenor, Telefonica, Telecom Italia and Vodafone, BONDI is an industry collaboration defining a secure operating environment and a set of open device interfaces so that Web applications can be enriched with access to W3C Geolocation, contact and calendar data, local connectivity and messaging services and more. BONDI provides secure access to the phone’s features from mobile widgets and from the Web, making it possible for users to enjoy a more personal and capable Web.
Aplix has been instrumental in the formulation of this standard, and SafeWID has been selected by OMTP as the core of the BONDI Reference Implementation (RI), providing the most cost-effective and consistent implementation of the specification. SafeWID enables BONDI compliance on existing browsers and web runtime on various embedded operating systems, hence providing consistent implementation necessary to deploy operator services efficiently.
“LiMo is strategically committed to enabling a rich mobile Internet experience for mass consumers and to helping web developers fully and broadly realize their ideas within the mobile marketplace,” said Morgan Gillis, executive director of LiMo Foundation™. “We are pleased to have selected this key technology from Aplix as an important step to realize the implementation of the OMTP BONDI specification which has been endorsed by LiMo Foundation™ and to encourage the very large pool of web development talent to bring new and innovative services to LiMo devices as they continue to proliferate.”
“We are proud to be recognized and be selected by the LiMo Foundation™ as its trusted solution in enabling the next generation of mobile web services”, said Ryu Koriyama, CEO of Aplix Corporation. “We will continue to support the BONDI effort to create an industry standard with openness and security as core architectural principles.”
With BONDI supported in LiMo devices, web developers will be able to write web applications and widgets that run on all handsets that implement the LiMo web runtime. To date, more than 42 LiMo handset models have been brought to the hands of consumers, and LiMo’s global operators including NTT DOCOMO, Orange, SK Telecom, Telefónica, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone have confirmed their commitment to specify and deploy a further array of handsets in 2009.
